Näkki is a Finnish fairy tale creature, which is said to be the wicked guardian of the river, the spring, the bridge, the bond or the well. Näkki frequently teases people and can even snatch somebody. According to belief man can swim safely if he throws a handful of small stones, soil or sand to the water before going to swim and says: "Näkki goes to the land and I go to the water", and after returning back to the land the same words the other way round: "Näkki goes to the water, I go to the land". Here's a short fairy-tale about Näkki dreaming about life in the land instead of his dark lake-bottom.
